FAQs

What is therapy?

Ah, therapy. There’s so much to be described and yet it’s difficult to find the words that capture all the layers of the work. Therapy is a human-to-human relationship that focuses on exploring patterns, experiences, symptoms, and stressors that get in the way of your life. Sometimes this means understanding past experiences (maybe in your family system, for example) while other times this means understanding your values and looking forward into the future. Whatever you need, therapy helps promote change in your brain (through the creation of new, connected experiences and a supportive relationship) that can lead to other emotional, cognitive, relational, spiritual, and mental adjustments.

How long does therapy usually last?

After three sessions, I will co-create a treatment plan with you that highlights your goals and hopes in the therapy process. We will revisit this plan throughout therapy and use this as an anchor for our time together. As such, depending on your presenting concern, therapy can be brief (around 12 sessions) or last several years. It really depends on the person.

How long is one therapy session?

I meet clients for a total of 55 minutes. Therapy takes place for 50 minutes (considered the “therapeutic hour”) and the last five minutes are dedicated to scheduling our next appointment and taking care of payment.

What is your process for working with a new client?

A potential client who is interested in my services can reach out to me via email or my contact page. From there, we will have a 20-minute consultation to learn about your goals and for you to ensure I am a good fit for what you are looking for. Once I meet with a client who is interested in moving forward, we will complete an intake session, so I learn all about your histories and life story. We will review paperwork at this session as well. From there, we will build a treatment plan and dive into the work.

What is the cancellation policy?

To avoid a 50% charge of your session fee, please cancel your session 24 hours in advance. Of course, life happens. In cases beyond your control, there will not be a cancellation fee applied.

Do you offer a sliding scale?

Prism offers a limited number of sliding scale spots. Contact us directly for more information.

What qualifications do you have?

I am provisionally licensed in the state of Colorado. This means I am working towards full licensure. I am currently a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate and a Marriage and Family Therapist Candidate.

What influenced you to become a therapist?

I decided to become a therapist for a few reasons. For one, I’ve always loved listening to human stories, especially where there are so many themes of joy, loss, resilience, community, adventures, and challenges. However, it wasn’t until I went through my own identity exploration and came out as queer that I realized how powerful therapy could be. Therapy helped build on my own existing strengths so that I could step into life as my true self. It was then that I began to hope I could offer this gift to others as a relational therapist.

What code of ethics do you follow?

As a member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), I adhere to the AAMFT Code of Ethics.
